‘The Freelance Academic’ by Dr Katie Pryal

Oh my - wish this book had come into my orbit sooner! I’d call it a must read for anyone making the mistake of thinking they were a failure because they had internalised the system’s failures - exactly what they want you to do. Any hope that your good luck is just around the corner with just one more year of 80 hour weeks is quickly quashed. ‘It aint coming!’ she tells you, and you just have to smile at the awesome honesty. Some of us lingered too long in the hope that that terrible nightmare called ‘neoliberal academia’ would change, but she tells it straight - it aint changing, you’re the one that needs to reinvent yourself, and when you remove the dependency you have on your institution for your livelihood you’ll get back your power. “The Great Resignation” is happening across all sorts of industries as a “f**k you” to capitalism. The systemic wage theft of universities has become a problem governments can no longer ignore or they will swiftly be accused of being intentional accomplices who knew all along. I hope every academic reads a book like this one, so they find the agency and liberation they need to work in a paid and sustainable way. She’ll rightly make you believe that you can do whatever you put your mind to.
