Universities in Australia and worldwide can obtain independent assessments of applications for promotion they are unsure of and would appreciate a second opinion on.

  • The assessments will be thorough, and will contact applicants for further in-depth contextualising information they may not feel safe to provide through written or verbal means to their employer.

  • The assessments aim to appraise academic performance in relation to better adjusted expectations of them, as women.

  • The emphasis will be on the value the applicant brings to the university as a whole person across her whole career and all parts of her life; it will not simply adjust her countable achievements since last promotion.

  • The reports will protect the applicants’ right to anonymity and privacy, so will not provide verbatim quotes.

  • The reports will be strictly confidential to the commissioning university with final decision-making responsibility.

  • The cost will depend on the number of applications the university would like assessed.

  • Applicants can ask their university to engage this service*.

  • Stereotypes of men that fail to address their diversity can sometimes favour them and sometimes not, so universities can also seek a second opinion on men applicants.

*Applicants need to check their university’s promotion policies as to whether paid external independent assessors can be additionally added to the review panel. If not, requests to repeal this exclusion can be made on their behalf, in line with the AVCC recommendation that an ‘equity and diversity’ representative monitor the process.

COVID-19

Many universities put a freeze on promotions in 2020 due to the pandemic. Its longer term impact on acknowledgement of work effort and care for others, attitudes about distance learning, understanding of working from home, and compassion for juggling caring, are also yet to be better understood. I look forward to working with you as you move toward better gender equity at a time when shifts in workplace culture have settled. I also wish you well at this uncertain time.
